Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data Squadjacent (“Squadjacent”, “we”, “us”) processes when you use the Squadjacent iPhone app and this website, and the choices you have. We built Squadjacent to collect as little as possible.

No accounts

Squadjacent has no sign-up. You don’t give us an email address, phone number or password. On first launch the app generates a cryptographic identity (an Ed25519 key pair) and stores it in your device’s Keychain. The private key never leaves your device. A public identifier derived from it lets other people recognise you in a space.

What we process

• Profile you choose: your display name and avatar (an icon, or a small photo if you pick one). These are stored on our servers so the people in your space can see them.
• Spaces and squads: the spaces (rooms) and squads (named groups) you create or join, and who is in them.
• Messages and shared media: the text messages, photos and GIFs you send in a space are stored on our servers so they appear in that space’s chat history for its participants. We don’t use them for advertising and we don’t sell them.
• Voice: live voice is transmitted in real time to the other people in your space. We do not record or store it.
• Presence: who is currently in a space, so participants can see each other.
• Notifications: if you enable push notifications, we store your device’s push token so we can alert you (e.g. to a squad invite or a message) when the app is closed. The notification is delivered through Apple’s Push Notification service.
• Favorites: people or spaces you choose to save for quick access.
• Device attestation: to fight spam and abuse we may verify that requests come from a genuine app on a genuine device using Apple’s App Attest / DeviceCheck.
• Operational logs: standard server and network logs (e.g. IP address, timestamps) needed to run the service securely, rate-limit abuse and troubleshoot.

Finding people nearby

Proximity discovery uses your phone’s local radios (Bluetooth and the local network via Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity). This happens directly between devices that are physically near each other — your location is not sent to us, and we do not track where you are.

Who we share with

We do not sell your data and we show no third-party advertising. We use a small number of processors only to operate the service:

• LiveKit — real-time voice and data transport (self-hosted on our infrastructure).
• Hosting — our servers run on dedicated infrastructure in the EU.
• Cloudflare — CDN and network protection (processes connection metadata such as IP).
• Apple — App Store distribution, device attestation, and push notifications (Apple Push Notification service delivers the alerts you opt into).
• Giphy — when you search for or send a GIF, the request is served via Giphy. We store only a reference to the chosen GIF, not the GIF itself.
• Radio Browser — when you search for an internet radio station to listen to together, the search is served via the Radio Browser directory.

Retention

Messages and shared media are kept as part of a space’s chat history and are deleted when that space is deleted. Voice is not recorded. Your profile (display name, avatar) and your squads and favorites are kept until you change or delete them, or ask us to. Operational logs are kept only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting.

Deleting your data

Because there’s no account, deleting the app removes your on-device identity and stops push notifications. To delete the data we hold (profile, messages and media you’ve sent, squads), email us at [email protected] and we’ll erase it.

Children

Squadjacent is not directed to children under 13, and you must be old enough to consent to this processing under your local law to use it.

Your rights

If you’re in the EU/EEA, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or port your data, and to object to processing. You can exercise these — or complain to your data-protection authority (in Finland, the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman) — by contacting us first at [email protected].
